Dedication of the inter-faith chapel

Wednesday 19 January saw many different faiths come together to dedicate the inter-faith chapel at Berrywood Hospital.  The ceremony was held in the Willow Room of Berrywood Hospital between 12noon and 2pm.  John Peet, trust chairman opened the ceremony welcoming all distinguished guests, staff, governors and service users.

Revd Christopher Goodley introduced each of the guests prior to their reading.  He confirmed that the NHS has nine world-faith traditions and was pleased to introduce seven to the ceremony.  The readings of Bahai, Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Islam, Judaism and Sikhism were made by the invited distinguished guests: Susan Philips, Stephanie Smyth, Bishop Donald Allister and Canon John Udris, Reddy Mettu, Abade Ahmed, John Josephs and Harkirat Singh.  After each of the readings a candle was lit.  The remaining two faiths of Jain and Zoroastrians were unable to attend the ceremony.

Bishop Donald Allister of Peterborough and Canon John Udris, Dean of Northampton Cathedral dedicated the altar in the Willow Room and the inter-faith chapel in the heart of the hospital – and welcomed the sacred place for staff, patients and relatives.

Following the dedication and silent prayers, everyone came together in the Willow Room for a light buffet lunch and the sharing of information.
