Championing services for adults with autism

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE Healthcare's Transitions and Liaison Team is leading the way in developing a new national model for specialist services for adults with Asperger syndrome and developmental conditions such as Tourette's syndrome and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

The work of the team has been highlighted in "A Better Future", the Department of Health's national consultation on a future strategy for adults with autistic spectrum disorders.

It has also been referenced in a National Audit Office report that examines support for adults with autism.

Following a visit by Kate Hardy, senior project manager for social care dignity and quality at the Department of Health, the Transition and Liaison Team's Kobus Van Rensburg has been invited to help draw up a new model for specialist services.

"In most parts of the country there is no service at all for adults with autistic spectrum disorders," said Kobus. "Here at Northamptonshire Healthcare we offer treatment and support for both Aspergers and ADHD."

The Transitions and Liaison Team receives works jointly with a vast range of services and agencies, including specialist forensic, learning disability, mental health, accommodation and commissioning, social care and health, employment, Connexions and further education services, as well as with organisations in the voluntary sector.

The service focuses on interventions to reduce social isolation and mental health difficulties. It helps people to develop independent living skills and relationships, as well as providing social and academic support, and improving employment opportunities.

The team involves service users in developing services and runs a training and awareness programme to enable early detection, intervention and treatment.
