The new unit will provide a safe, supportive and therapeutic environment where children and young people aged 13 to 18 years will receive assessment and treatment for a range of mental health problems.
The Tier IV unit will be a single-storey 10-bedded inpatient facility on the Princess Marina Hospital site in Northampton.
Work on site is already underway. Construction will be phased over a 32-week programme, with a phased opening in April 2010.
Alfred Hanson, head of child and adolescent services for the trust said: "I'm really proud of the aspirations of service users, their families and carers which have helped to drive the design of the building.
"This is an exciting time for Northamptonshire Healthcare as we take the lead in providing a new, purpose-built, state-of-the-art facility for the children and young people in the county."
Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust became responsible for managing and providing a single countywide child and adolescent mental health service for the county in October last year.
