THE finance team at Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust has been named one of the top teams in the country by leading healthcare financial management organisation, the Healthcare Financial Management Association.
Northamptonshire Healthcare’s finance department was runner-up in this year’s Accounts Team of the Year award. The trust was one of three teams short-listed for the award, and was narrowly beaten by Mersey Care NHS Trust.
The team, which is led by Bill McFarland, director of finance and performance, was also praised earlier in the year by the Audit Commission, which awarded the trust the highest possible rating for financial management in the Auditor’s Local Evaluation (ALE). Of the 11 trusts awarded the level 4 (highest) rating, Northamptonshire Healthcare NHS Foundation trust had the highest overall score.
Bill McFarland said: “I am delighted to see the hard work and the success of the finance team recognised in this way.
“Our funding comes from taxpayers’ money, so it is important that we can demonstrate that we have sound financial management arrangements and use that money wisely.
“The trust’s overall success in managing its resources so efficiently is, of course, a joint effort between the finance team and all the managers and staff at Northamptonshire Healthcare.
“The finance team plays a key role in this, not just by keeping the books and generating the accounts, but also by helping managers manage and make the most of their budgets.”
In 2008/09, the finance department oversaw an overall budget of more than £100 million and a capital budget of £2.7 million. The trust met all its statutory financial duties and ended the year with a surplus of £300,000.
Northamptonshire Healthcare became a foundation trust on May 1, 2009. The trust provides mental health, learning disability, sexual and drug and alcohol treatment services for people living in Northamptonshire.
