Berrywood Hospital is top!

NORTHAMPTONSHIRE Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust and Balfour Beatty Construction celebrated the hundredth week of construction at the new Berrywood Hospital on October 21 with a topping out ceremony.

With less than 30 weeks left to the completion of the new hospital, the ceremony celebrated the hospital reaching its highest point in construction.

Northamptonshire Healthcare’s chairman, John Peet, and Balfour Beatty’s general manager for the Midlands, Dave Ronan, tightened a golden bolt and unveiled a plaque to commemorate the event.

The bolt and plaque will be on permanent display throughout the life of the hospital.

John Peet said: “This is a huge step forward for mental health services in Northampton, which is getting a modern, purpose-built hospital offering some of the best facilities anywhere in the country.”

The £35 million new Berrywood Hospital will see the end of old-fashioned dormitory wards and a big emphasis on patient facilities. When complete, the new complex will provide 125 beds in single en-suite rooms, along with group therapy rooms, an academic library and other facilities, all set in landscaped gardens.

Phase one of the new hospital, the four adult mental health wards, opened in December last year. Phase two of the hospital, which is currently under construction, will provide four new older people’s mental health wards and other facilities, including a resource centre, ECT suite, pharmacy, low secure unit and academic centre and library.

Berrywood Hospital is scheduled for completion in May 2010.
